WHEN his breeding and the ability he displayed in his brief racing career are weighed up, the $2,200 service fee set by Steve Fell for Polarmore looks remarkable value.
A newcomer this year to his Oxley Island Thoroughbreds stud in the Manning River Valley mid NSW north coast, Polarmore has many positives.
To start with he is a rare commodity in that his breeding brings together a world class sire, More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo – Woodman's Girl, by Woodman), and a Golden Slipper winner, Polar Success (Success Express – Pateau, by Covetous).
In addition, as Covetous is by superstar Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star, Polarmore carries quite a few of the genes that produced Sebring, the 2008 Slipper winner who from use at the Widden Stud is one of the best sires in Australia. He is by More Than Ready and from Purespeed, a non winner by the Danehill Slipper winner Flying Spur and from a daughter of Luskin Star.
A major difference between Sebring and Polarmore is that the new Oxley Island sire is free of Danehill, by far the most dominant influence in Australia this century. Outcrossing to Danehill using More Than Ready as the sire has resulted in over 160 winners.
A brother to Lockroy (Sydney winner, second Maribyrnong Plate and a half-brother to Polaway (Giant's Causeway filly, won Sydney, Listed second) and himself a $500,000 Easter yearling, Polarmore has an immediate family continually producing excellence.
Sold in Sydney as a broodmare in 2009 for $1,200,000, his Golden Slipper winning dam Polar Success is one of eight winners from Patou, a good sprinting half-sister to the dams of Bring Me The Maid (a top Sebring filly) and Ain't Seen Nothin' (by Nothin' Leica Dane). Ain't Seen Nothin' is dam of three stakes winners including Hussonet Singapore champion Stepitup.
Polarmore's third dam, Polar Maid, is a half-sister to Olympic Aim, grandam Australian champion racehorses and quality sires Elvstroem (by Danehill) and Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus) and the third dam of Australian international sprinter and dual hemisphere sire Starspangledbanner (by Choisir).
Polarmore himself ran only five times, but suggested he had first class ability with two trial wins at Randwick, a debut 0.7 lengths third at Canterbury Park and three weeks later a 1.8 lengths win as favourite on the Randwick inner track (Kensington).
He is one of two young sires available this year at Steve Fell's Oxley Island Thoroughbreds stud. Also standing on a $2,200 fee, the other is Direct Charge, a 2010 born bay colt bred on a cross of Arrowfield Stud sires, the Red Ransom Galaxy Stakes winner and Golden Slipper second Charge Forward and champion Redoute's Choice.
The dam, Lady of Choice, is a half-sister to six winners, including Burrito (won Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes) and from Enchilada, an American winner by celebrated Alydar. Enchilada is a three-quarter sister to Clear Choice, an American Group1 winner and sire of stakes winners from use in Australia.
Raced seven times for a win in the historic early juvenile test at Flemington, the Maribyrnong Plate, and a third in the $250,000 Inglis Classic at Rosehill Gardens, Direct Charge was test bred to a handful of mares last season.
Direct Charge and Polarmore have been preceded at the Oxley Island stud by Home on the Grange, a Danehill whose progeny have included the home bred filly Danesiri, a winner of seven races up to Group 3 level. He is also sire of Island Dane (13 wins, including Taree Cup) and Rodeo Playboy (7 wins, third Taree Cup).
The Oxley Island Thoroughbreds stud is a well appointed and professionally conducted breeding farm at which pasture management, nutrition, education and handling is all of the highest standard. Each mare receives individual care, full or short term agistment is available and, besides on farm stallion services, mares can be walked to Hunter Valley studs.
