Polarmore Retires To Oxley Island Thoroughbreds
POLARMORE, a Sydney-winning son of champion sire More Than Ready (USA) and the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 winner Polar Success, will cover his first book of mares at Steven Fell’s Oxley Island Thoroughbreds, near Taree this spring. His fee is just $2200.
Trained in Sydney by John O’Shea, the brown colt tuned up for his racing career with four barrier trials, firstly in May (second) and June 2013 and then in September (won both). He was narrowly beaten when third in Sydney (1100m) on debut on October 2 behind Adage and then won next time out over 1150m at Kensington (1100m in 1:07.68), beating Supreme Effort by 1.75 lengths. He was put away after an unplaced run as favourite at Rosehill in early November after being stopped in his tracks by the erratic Blackboard Special during the race.
“He was going to be fighting out the finish and obviously got stood on his head,” jockey Tim Clark said. “It stopped his momentum and cost him a chance of being in the finish.”
Polarmore was unplaced in two appearances at the track in March 2014 and retired. He is among 1340 winners (144SW) sired by Gr.1 winner and leading sire More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo-Woodman’s Girl by Woodman) including sensational young sire Sebring and Phelan Ready, both also Golden Slipper winners. Sebring’s second dam is by Luskin Star, while Polarmore’s second dam Patou is by Covetous, a Group-winning son of Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star.
Polarmore’s dam, Polar Success, won four races and $2.17m including the Golden Slipper and Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2 and she is a daughter of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-Gr.1 winner Success Express (USA), a successful sire (his Gr.1 winners also include Mossman) and broodmare sire (10 Gr.1 winners including Shamus Award, Pinker Pinker and Savabeel, all Cox Plate winners). Polar Success is the dam of five winners including Gr.3-placed Lockroy (also by More Than Ready) and Listed runner-up Polaway (Giant’s Causeway).
Stakes placed Patou won eight races to 1200m and left eight winners including other black type performers Parfumier (Belong to Me), Eau de Joie (Encosta de Lago) and Port Headland (Woodman), while her dam, Polar Maid (Khairpour) is a half-sister to top class performer Bit of a Skite and to the dam of Circles of Gold (dam of Elvstroem and Haradasun) and to the dams of Bring Me The Maid (Sebring) and Ain’t Seen Nothin’ (Nothin’ Leica Dane).
The family has crossed well with Danehill, a name missing in Polarmore’s pedigree, so it will be no surprise to see him do well from mares whose pedigrees feature that nine-times Champion Australian Sire. There are also stakes winners in this family by All American, Hussonet and Starcraft. Polarmore is another descendant of famous NZ “blue hen” Eulogy (22b), his ninth dam.
Polarmore stands alongside the VRC Maribyrnong Plate-Gr.3 winner Direct Charge (Charge Forward-Lady of Choice by Redoute’s Choice) who is also on $2200. He retired to stud in 2014 and his dam is a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Burrito (Marscay) and to the dams of Gr.3 winners Collate, Posadas and Petrol Power. Direct Charge’s second dam Enchilada (USA) is by a champion US sire in Alydar and from Famed Princess by Nashua from Copper Princess (9f) by Princequillo.
