They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks but jockey Brandon Stockdale and trainer Trevor Andrews certainly taught an older mare new tricks with her break-through win at Cranbourne on Friday night in the Highview Accounting Services Maiden Plate over 1000m.
The five-year-old mare Jumped away fairly and was urged to the front pretty strongly by Stockdale before settling third in a hotly run race. Dawn's Sunrise was then able to sneak up on the fence and cut the corner as they turned for home. She hit the lead at the 200m on the inside of Royal Rebel and was able to put a gap on them and held on from the fast finishing She's A Pluck.
Dawn's Sunrise was bred by John Pratt of Brooker Park who was pleased to see the mare claim her first win.
"Its great to see her back at the races and win first-up because her last four starts before going into the break she was racing pretty well with three placings and a fifth," said John Pratt.
"She is the last foal of the mare, Yelgun Dawn, so it is pleasing to see her last foal go on to be a winner."
Brandon Stockdale, who rode a double on the night, was also thrilled with the win.
"She's been racing well, first up tonight and Mr. Andrews said that she is fit and well and she's ready to go so we bounced out and we had the intentions to lead but when Luke Nolan wanted to put a bit more pace in the race I was happy to let him him go," said Stockdale after the race.
"Travelled up nicely and got the run on the rail and away she went. She's been racing well and that's the first time I've sat on her back tonight so happy to get the win."
Dawn's Sunrise is by Any Given Saturday and is out of the Deputy Governor mare, Yelgun Dawn. Yelgun Dawn was retired from stud duties in 2012 after foaling Dawn's Sunrise.
